Answers to common faculty questions about streaming video for online courses.

Quick Links

What is Kanopy?

Kanopy is a collection of over 26,000 documentary, art house and indie films.  Highlights from this collection includes films from California Newsreel, Media Education Foundation and Criterion Collection.

Kanopy is currently in Mediated mode, limiting viewing to the films CCSF has licensed.

Type the keyword "kanopy" in the search box of the Books and Media tab in OneSearch to retrieve all of the films licensed and their expiration dates.

You can access Kanopy from the library website's Articles and Databases page.

Questions? Contact the library.

There are a few ways to find videos:

1. Search by keyword: In the search box, type your search terms.

2. Browse: Click on "Subjects." Then click on Race & Class Studies.

3. Search by keyword "kanopy" in CityCat (library catalog)

Creating Kanopy Accounts

Go to Kanopy. Once you've logged in with your RAM ID (if off-campus) or access Kanopy (if on campus), you have the option of creating a personal user account.  What are the benefits of doing this?

  • Allows you to add films to your watchlist and add comments
  • Lets you curate your own playlists of films and clips, that can be shared with your students via Insight, email, social media or your website
  • Gives you control of user settings including playback and close captioning

To create an account, simply locate the "sign up" button in the upper right corner of the screen.

Streaming from Home

An active RAM ID (student ID number) and RAM ID password is required for off-campus access to Films on Demand and Kanopy. When accessing these resources from off-campus, users will be prompted to log in with RAM ID, then will be able to view resources as if they are on-campus.

Kanopy Requests for Purchase

The library prioritizes streaming access via Kanopy to films assigned as required viewing in online course syllabi.

Users may submit purchase suggestions to the library through Kanopy's online request form. Please include the course name and number, as well as the date the film is assigned in your request.

Kanopy is available for FREE to San Francisco Public Library users.  (see SFPL's online FAQ)

Please email Michele McKenzie if you have questions about streaming videos for courses.
