Open Educational Resources (OER): Open Access

Guide to Open Educational Resources

About Open Access

What is Open Access?

open access logo

Open Access is not the same as Open Educational Resources, but they are related. Open Access refers to easily accessible online content such as scholarly books and journals that are free of charge and free of copyright and licensing restrictions. There are varying opinions about the definition of Open Access. Some agree that it means for one to freely access and read open access content, while in others state that open access grants ability to remix and revise the content, not unlike OER. Regardless, these types of resources should be identified by a Creative Commons license in order to qualify as open access or OER.
