Design 101: Artstor

Use this guide to research projects for the City College of San Francisco class Design 101

Images from the Web

A digital library of more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. Collections consist of contributions from museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives, and artists/artists' estates.

How to Search ARTstor:

You can search Artstor by keyword or by group or other limiter.

For the Design 101 assignment on emotions, try a keyword search on a specific emotion, try anger or angry, sad or sadness, etc. Some results will be great. Others will make less sense, and were retrieved for obscure reasons. You can enlarge any image and zoom in! Often your results will be narrative rather than abstract because of the way that things are cataloged.

Here is an alternative way to search:

1. Go to the Library's Articles & Databases page.

2. Click on Artstor.

3. Click on Enter Artstor Digital Library at the top of the page.

4. Create an account, this will make it possible for you to go directly to and login for 120 days. After that period, you will need to login from the CCSF Library website using your RAM ID.

7. Find an image and click on it to zoom in and see details!
