Finding Books

How do you find books?

LITERARY CRITICISM:

SEARCH BY SUBJECT:

Enter author's last name, first name.   Example:  conrad joseph   Browse: until you see criticism and interpretation

Search by KEYWORD:  AUTHOR NAME CRITICISM,   AUTHOR NAME TITLE OF WORK CRITICISM

Examples:
shakespeare criticism
shakespeare hamlet criticism
shakespeare sonnets criticism
conrad "heart of darkness" criticism
whitman "leaves of grass" criticism, etc.

Searching for TOPICS:

  1. Think of your major concepts
  2. Think of keywords
  3. Think of synonyms or alternate words that have similar meanings/concepts

Example.  Topic: What is the impact of factory farms on the environment?

  1. Think of your major concepts: factory farms, environment
  2. Think of keywords:  factory farms, environment
  3. Think of synonyms or alternate words that have similar meanings/concepts:
    1. factory farms:  industrial, corporate, agribusiness, CAFO (confined animal feeding operations)
    2. environment: environmental, sustainable, ecology
  4. When appropriate use an ASTERISK at the end of the word:  farm*     This tells the computer to look for farm, farms, farming at the same time.
  5. Use quotes around 2 OR MORE words that should be searhed in that EXACT order.  Example: "factory farm*"
  6. Use the KEYWORD search.
  7. Your basic search might be:  "factory farm*"  environment*
  8. A more complex search might be:  ("factory farm*" or agribusiness or CAFO) (environment* or sustainable)

Searching for AUTHORS:

  1. Select the AUTHOR search and enter the LAST NAME then the FIRST NAME.
  2. Example: SHAKESPEARE WILLIAM

Searching for books ABOUT someone:

  1. Select the SUBJECT search and enter the last name then the first name of the person you are interested in.
  2. Example: SHAKESPEARE WILLIAM

Finding DVDs, CDs, videos and other audiovisual materials
